LISTEN: Pay full attention to what the other person is saying without judgment or distraction or waiting for your turn to disagree or make your own statement. Do not think about what you want to say, try not to react, try not to let any emotions interfere with actively listening, such as anger, sadness, fear or any other emotions – stay calm and focused.

OBSERVE: Look at the body language. Are they closed off, are they open? Do their actions and tone of voice match what they are saying?

VERIFY: Reflect back to the other person what you think you heard. This requires a great deal of empathy and deeper attention.

ENCOURAGE: Let the other person know how much you care about them and how you want to get to the right understanding of their point of view, or their feelings about the matter.
